The history of Sundfors Boat Yard

For many generations, the Sundfors family practiced boat building in the small village of Öja, close to the town of Kokkola on the west coast of Finland. The area is well known because of its shipbuilding tradition. The Sundforses have been building mainly boats used for local transport, fishery and wood logging.

In the 1930’s boat building concentrated more and more on pleasure craft. The Sundforses built boats like rowing boats with sails and various motorboats. Also smaller sailing boats were built. Most boats were built according to local traditions. Besides newly built boats different kind of maintenance and repairs were carried out.

Sundfors Boat Yard today

In the beginning of the 1960’s Selim Sundfors and his son Lage started building boats in Kokkola. They concentrated on classic boats built of wood.

The Sundfors Boat Yard has a long experience in building wooden sailing boats. Therefore, the boats are built to high quality standards with great craftsmanship.

With the help of todays technical possibilities and materials, the Boat Yard has further developed and improved traditional boat building techniques. As the result of these developments the new-built wooden boats are longer lasting and easier to maintain than older wooden boats.

Sundfors Boat Yard uses the same subcontractors as the local boat building industry. The Sundfors Boat Yard can build boats to the yard’s own design or to the design of the customer’s own choice. The boats to Sundfors design are classical wooden boats which are answering to today’s demands.
